The one where I figure out Twitter

Posted: January 22, 2009

I’ve been resistant.  I will admit, I looked at all the Twitterites and scratched my head.

‘What’s the point?’ I wondered.

I thought it was overhyped.  A single-purpose application that was being overutilized and obsessed over by people with waay too much time on their hands.

I thought it might be cool, if I had the time.  Then I saw that LeVar Burton had signed up for Twitter.  And he had just dragged Brent Spiner on as well.  So I signed up.

For my first post:
‘I’ve resisted the twitter gravitation up till now. It looks like there is no more choice. LeVar Burton and Brent Spiner are on here.’

So the next day, I’m checking my email, and see I’ve got a personal message from Twitter.  LeVar Burton sent me a message welcoming me to Twitter.  Lt. Cmdr Feakin Geordi LaForge sent me a personal message.

No confessions neccessary, I’m a trekkie.  Of course, every trekkie wants to be the Captain.  ‘Make it so.’ and it is.  Cool.

But I really was a fan of Engineering.  Sure the Captain gets the glory.  ‘Saves the day’.  But it’s engineering that makes it happen.  Every episode Captain Picard would call down to Engineering and say, ‘This week, I need you to break these laws of physics.  And you have one hour.’  And Geordi and Data would put their brains together, positronic or otherwise, and they’d break all the laws of the known universe.

Getting a personal welcome from the head of engineering is about as cool on the geek factor as meeting MacGyver.

So, I get it Twitter.  I am now a Twitterite.  I probably won’t obsess over my following stats like some people.  But I definitely get it.  I’m a believer.
